Nyhavn is a 17th century waterfront, canal and entertainment district in Copenhagen, Denmark. Stretching from Kongens Nytorv to the harbor front just south of the Royal Playhouse, it is lined by brightly colored 17th and early 18th century townhouses and bars, cafes and restaurants. Serving as a heritage harbor, the canal has many historical wooden ships. (Source)

For those in search of the well-loved children's story writer, Hans Christian Andersen, Nyhavn is the place. Nyhavn was constructed by King Christian V from 1670-73, dug by Swedish war prisoners from the Dano-Swedish War 1658–1660. It is a gateway from the sea to the old inner city at Kongens Nytorv (King's Square), where ships handled cargo and fishermen's catch. It was notorious for beer, sailors, and prostitution. Danish author Hans Christian Andersen lived at Nyhavn 18 for some years. (Source)

As ocean-going ships grew larger, Nyhavn was taken over by internal Danish small vessel freight traffic. After World War II land transport took over this role and small vessel traffic disappeared from the Port of Copenhagen, leaving Nyhavn largely deserted of ships.

In the mid-1960s, the Nyhavn Society was founded with the aim of revitalising Nyhavn. In 1977, Nyhavn was inaugurated as a veteran ship and museum harbour by Overborgmester i København (Copenhagen’s Lord Mayor) Egon Weidekamp. (Source)

In my experience, Nyhavn is the perfect place to eat ice cream on any warm, sunny afternoon or the place to have lunch or dinner with friends. While we were there, I enjoyed sitting at the harbor, watching the ships go by, munching on sausages we bought from a street vendor and nodding my head to music played by a band from a nearby cafe.

Goodbye To Kronborg

I felt a sense of satisfaction as we left Kronborg Castle. I came to Copenhagen and visited all the places on my list. The feeling of relief comes as our trip to Denmark is coming to a close.

Our visit at the Kronborg Castle ended with a meal of Denmark's open-faced sandwiches. Before boarding the train back to Copenhagen, Kepi and I ate at a random sandwich shop near the castle. With chilled bottles of Coke, we enjoyed the open-faced sandwiches with liver pate, ham and fried fish.

Whenever I visit a city or a country, I research and try to found out what are their famous eats or what their country is known for. Before I flew to Denmark, I read about the Danish open-faced sandwiches called Smørrebrød (originally smør og brød; Danish for "butter and bread"). According to Wikipedia, these sandwiches are usually consist of a piece of buttered rye bread, a dense, dark brown bread. Pålæg (literally "on-lay"), the topping, then among others can refer to commercial or homemade cold cuts, pieces of meat or fish, cheese or spreads. This daily practice is the base on which the art of the famous Danish open sandwich, smørrebrød is created: A slice or two of pålæg is placed on the buttered bread, and then pyntet (decorated) with the right accompaniments, to create a tasty and visually appealing food item. Just a little history on these open-faced sandwiches: In the Middle Ages, thick slabs of coarse bread called "tranches" (late 15th century French) or, in its English derivative, "trenchers", were used as plates. At the end of the meal, the food-soaked trencher was eaten by the diner (from which we get the expression "trencherman"), or perhaps fed to a dog or saved for beggars. Trenchers were as much the harbingers of open-face sandwichesas they were of disposable dishware. As such, open-face sandwiches have a unique origin and history, differing from that of the true (multi-slice) sandwich. (Source)

Crypt Of The Capuchins

When we visited Rome in 2010, I was determined to visit the Crypt of the Capuchins, since I never did took the time to visit this place while I was living in Rome in 2007. The crypt is quite easy to find. It is walking distance from the Stazione Barberini (Metro Station Barberini), which is the same stop for the Fontana di Trevi, Piazza Barberini and Via Veneto, which is quite known for shopping and cozy cafes. When we found the Crypt, we paid about 2 Euros, which is more of a donation than an entrance fee. The nun who was manning the desk that day was very strict about observing silence at all times and pointed to my camera saying, "No photographs allowed."

My experience at the Crypt was both eerie and curious. Eeriness because I was walking in the presence of the departed and curiousness of how someone thought of turning bones into art. The place has a very peaceful feel and it was strangely cool inside. It's amazing how many bones they have in there and more interesting is how they are displayed. Since photography isn't allowed, I scanned the postcard I got during our visit.

In 1630, the Capuchin friars - so-called because of the "capuche" or hood attached to their religious habit - left the friary of St. Bonaventure near the Trevi Fountain and came to live in the present one, of which only the church cemetery remain. The remains of the deceased friars were transported from the old friary and laid to rest in this cemetery, underneath the present church. The bones were arranged along the walls, and the friars began to bury their own dead here, as well as the bodies of poor Romans... Here the Capuchins would come to pray and reflect each evening before retiring for the night. Over the years, until 1870, further alterations transformed this burial place into the work of art we see today. It's message is clear: death closes the gates of time, and opens those of eternity.

Apparently, "when the monks arrived at the church in 1631, they brought 300 cartloads of deceased friars. Fr. Michael of Bergamo oversaw the arrangement of the bones in the burial crypt. The soil in the crypt was brought from Jerusalem, by order of Pope Urban VIII. As monks died during the lifetime of the crypt, the longest-buried monk was exhumed to make room for the newly-deceased who was buried without a coffin, and the newly-reclaimed bones were added to the decorative motifs. Bodies typically spent 30 years decomposing in the soil, before being exhumed." (Source)

Searching For Shakespeare's Elsinore

While researching about the must see places in Denmark, the castle of Kronborg stood out for me especially when I read that it was the castle Elsinore used by Shakespeare in his play Hamlet. It was like walking to a Shakespearean play that came to life.

The town of Helsingor is about 30 minutes from Copenhagen and it is easily reachable by train. From the station, it is about 15 to 20 minutes walk to reach the castle. For those who love Shakespeare, this place is a must see.

Five Things I Learned From Cruising

I had have my share of travel experiences from backpacking in Tuscany, Italy, fighting for my space in crowded buses in Kalinga and Sagada, Philippines, hiking to small mountain villages such as Dinungsay, Kalinga, standing room trains bound in some parts of Europe (this experience even included a really stinky passenger beside me and one guy almost falling off the door because the train went on a sudden halt), driving for eight hours from Maryland to Quebec, flying through cheap airlines to some far off small airport to save some money and most recently, cruising the Mediterranean and the Baltics. Cruising is one good way to travel especially if you have at least a week or more vacation time allowed. Some cruises even go for a month-long journey. It's also a good alternative for travelers who couldn't stand the stress of hopping from one transportation to another or sweating in some hotels that were misrepresented on some website; I know, I've been there.

Some people shun the idea of cruising because they claim to be hard core trekkers/hikers and indie travel purists, but understand that we are all different types of travelers and not all of us are into backpacking or trekking, so cruising is just another vehicle to explore the world. Not that there's something wrong about indie travel, but that some of us just don't have the stamina for such travel. After all, the worse thing you could do is travel and you end up miserable and unhappy while on the road. The world is here to explore, explore it the way you see fit and you'll be happier. In the end, what matters most is that you're experiencing places and culture around the world.

With two cruises in my pocket, I learned a few things I'd like to share with you.

Life Is A Cruise: Cruising is a more relaxed way to travel compared to being on the road all the time. I know several cruise passengers who just lounged at the pool even if we're at port of call. Being in a cruise sort of takes away the stress of getting lost, stressing of not making your next flight, or worried that your hostel, hotel or B&B is not to your liking. In a cruise, you get your room cleaned and made up every day and your hotel floats to your next destination.
Group Tours Or On Your Own: There are itineraries available at every port of call. For people who simply wants to see places without the headache of dealing with itineraries, cruise operators offer a variety of group tours. In my experience, group tours offer pick ups and drop offs, so all you have to do is hop on the bus armed with your camera and enjoy your itinerary for the day with an experienced guide. Group tours offer less travel stress and if you happen to have a knowledgeable guide, you'll be given a lot of local information about the city your visiting. Also, it's a valuable experience to be able to ask questions from your guide. On the downside, group tours can range from $50 to $200 per person and can be expensive. The good thing is, you have a choice to visit the country on your own and do away with the formatted group tour. We toured Tallinn, Estonia and Helsinki, Finland on our own and we had a wonderful time going our own pace exploring these cities. However, I don't recommend going on your own in certain places like St. Petersburg, Russia especially that some of the must visits sites require you to be on a tour group. Another downside to tour groups is that sometimes, tour guides have to rush travelers because they are running late or out of time. You have to understand that tour guides follow a time schedule and that they have to make sure you have to see all the designated places in your itinerary, and still make it back to your ship before time of departure.
Floating City: Boarding a cruise ship means you have a floating room and board to every country you visit. In addition, you also have entertainment onboard, activities such as learning a new language and crafts (for a minimal fee), sports and exercise facilities to keep your body in shape, choice of restaurants (some restaurants you have to pay and some are included in your cruise package) and of course, there's always that buffet table that is open 24 hours when you get hunger pangs even at 12 am. Being in a cruise ship is comparable to being in a floating city where there's a casino, a theater, spa services, laundry services, shops, library, play rooms and more. Sometimes, facilities and amenities available depends on the size of your ship.
Sea Meditation: If you get tired of the casino and the onboard entertainment, you can always look to the sea for inspiration. Gazing at the vastness of the sea can be very relaxing and meditative. While on cruise, take the time to smell the fresh sea breeze, grab a book and find a quiet corner and be lost in a novel, or join an early morning yoga class to start your day right. And if you're cruising with your partner, go to the highest deck to watch the sunrise or sunset huddled in a blanket, nothing can be more romantic than that.
The Ship Is A Destination: The ship's staff comes from all over the globe. If you want to meet different types of people and personalities in one destination, the cruise ship is a good place. The ships' crew are very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Yes, they are paid to provide customer service but they're an integral part in making your trip memorable. Just think how far these people come from just to make your trip a successful one. After each cruise I took, I started missing some of the staff I met that really made an impression on me. The cruise ship itself is a country and worthy as a destination.

So what exactly is keeping me busy? Two words - textbooks and a cat.

Next week, I'm plunging back to grad school. I already got most of my textbooks; there's two more books missing which I'll pick up at the bookstore by Tuesday. I'm optimistic this semester will be interesting. I'm taking a class in American literature (elective) and another one on U.S. Immigration history (core). The books are rather interesting especially the readings on my literature class. I took two core courses last semester and the readings were too demanding. I'm hoping that with an elective class, it will make the prerequisites of my core subject a little less demanding. Or, would at least allow me to spend more time studying for my core subject.

I Travel In My Sleep

My mind has been working overtime even in my sleep.

Spring semester is starting next week and I've been busy purchasing my books and trying to get my schedule straightened out. With school, planning trips takes a bit of skill and timing to be able to squeeze trips in between. So even if I'm in school, I intend to travel still. I have realized a long time ago that I can't live without the joys of travel. I was 20 when I first traveled on my own to Alaska and since then, I craved the delectation of the journey as well as the trepidation of traveling to new places.

For 2012, I have so many things on my list that I want to accomplish. With my health challenges still looming in my mind, I intend to live this year as best as I can and do what makes me happy; this may sound selfish but life's too short to be just waiting for happiness. I am pertaining to finding what makes you really happy and going for it.

Our first two trips of the year have been booked and I'm beyond elated. For the first few months of this year, I want to:

escape winter for a few days and enjoy the lights and warmth of Vegas
drive to the Grand Canyon and witness with my own eyes its beauty and splendor
enjoy time with mom, kepi and possibly dad
eat sari-sari and adobo omelet at Elena's; they're a fave eatery in Hawaii and they recently opened a restaurant in Vegas
enjoy watching the fountains of Bellagio with my Kepi
feel the energy and culture of Reykjavik
soak in the Blue Lagoon and feel its healing powers
walk on a glacier
take photos and enjoy nature at Thingvellir National Park and Gullfoss
gaze at the aurora borealis until I fall asleep (depends if we can catch a glimpse of it in May)
sink my teeth into a plokkfiskur (wine-dried fish) or see if I could handle hakarl (fermented shark meat)
to travel slow and savor every minute of it

Lunch At Hillerod

According to the Hillerod's website, the city is "a modern and pulsating city, with its own unique flavour. The bustling life of the town square and pedestrian street set in the surroundings of the fairy tale castle and picturesque lake are truly exceptional. The city centre is dominated by the magnificent renaissance castle and gardens, built and once inhabited by the King and his court. The castle itself is now a museum, but the church within is still very much in use." (Source) This description got it right, and if I were to go back to Denmark, I wouldn't hesitate to hop on that train to visit Hillerod again.

Interior And Gardens Of Frederiksborg Castle

The beauty of Frederiksborg Castle resonates inside and out.

There are times I enjoy exploring one place without a map or a brochure, my visit to Frederiksborg is one of them. Sometimes, I get too involved with the history of one place that I end up ignoring the beauty around me. This time, I didn't pay attention to the brochure or self guided audio tour about the castle. I simply walked the castle's rooms not minding what it was for, what is it made of or who designed the rooms. By simply enjoying the walk and admiring what is laid in front of me, I saw more and understood deeper the meaning of the place. Sometimes, travel is not about the history or the significance of one place, but simply being "there."

Luckily, it didn't rain so we stayed longer and too more photos. We also walked around the residential area close to the castle. This is really a beautiful area to visit.

The beauty of this area really enchanted me. While Kepi and I were walking to the train station, I told him that if I could move, I'd like to move to Hillerod, own a house near the castle. The train to Copenhagen hummed through the beautiful country side. Truly, I admit. Denmark has caught my heart.

Looking Forward To

2012 is just finishing its first week, but I've been thinking and planning all the things I can do this year. For the first couple of months, I am looking forward to:

my pay increase at work - it would be nice to have some extra money for travel
launching my etsy store - i hope my bead creations would sell
incorporate walking every afternoon to build up my stamina - being sickly last year made me into a couch potato
starting spring semester - my subjects are interesting this semester: immigration and american literature
restaurant week - already reserved a lunch date for Mom and I
my birthday in a couple of weeks - woohoo, celebrating life
the cherry blossoms and tulips in spring
finalizing travel plans for the year - so many destinations so little time

What I've Been Doing

My interest to replicate my grandma's Igorot beads sparkled my interest in beading. I never saw myself as a crafty person since I can't crochet or sew to save my life, but beading approached me in a different way. I love to play with the colors, the feel of the beads, and sometimes, the colors of the beads reflect how I felt when I was designing a necklace or bracelet. So during the holiday weeks, I tried my hands into beading.

This is how I start my design and if I don't like what came out, I switch the beads around until I love the result.

This necklace is made of glass beads and it's about 14 inches.

There are two globe-like green beads for pendant.

This necklace is inspired from my trip to Greece. The blue beads remind me of the blue domed churches in Santorini.

This is the pendant, made of a stone-like resin bead.

This necklace is about 14 inches and it is made with ceramic and resin beads.

This is a bracelet with pink and purple beads. I was particularly drawn to the purple rose accent.

A second bracelet I created with purple and bluish beads. It's made with a stretchable string so it's easy to put on and off.

Santa Skis At The National Harbor

One of the things we did during the Christmas weekend is watch the water ski stunts at the National Harbor. What's intriguing is that the skiers were in Christmas costumes. It was so chili that day that Kepi got sick the next day. Obviously, the water is cold at this time of year and I was impressed how the skiers took the waters and went on with their show anyway.

Houses and My Hobbies

Houses have always been my thing ever since I was little and I just love working on them and making them something special to feel proud of. I love living here in Texas and for as long as I can remember I’ve been going to open houses and driving around on the weekends trying to find out what’s available in my price range. Anyway, not too long ago I got wireless internet Humble and that’s helped me stay on top of the homes in my area while I’m in my car driving around. I think I may become a sort-of real estate investor but I’ll need my dad’s help to get started – I’m going to have to talk to him about getting into business with me. I love being a part of a project and there’s no greater project than fixing up an old house. Bringing life back to properties is something I feel passionate about and that’s the honest to goodness truth! I can’t wait to get off and running on this venture.

A Christmas Morning

I woke up real early on Christmas Day and tiptoed to the kitchen to make myself a warm cup of cocoa.

Everyone was still asleep as we had a late night on Christmas Eve. After the Midnight Festive Mass, we came home at around 1 AM and proceeded to open our presents; it was Christmas morning after all. It was a wonderful, warm feeling to see family light up with smiles as they each opened their wrapped presents. Pieces of wrappers and ribbons fell down like rain, as Dizzy, the house cat, pawed and playfully chewed the ribbons and perched on every discarded wrapper. At this time of year, it is about family, home and of course - the cat.

It's not about the presents at all. Christmas morning was made beautiful with thoughts that: a Savior's birth is celebrated; my family is tucked safely at home sleeping; thankful that my health is improving; my job is going well; love abounds at home; and blessings never stop pouring.

After the presents have been unwrapped and the shouts of excitement dissipated, it was nice to wake up to a quiet, peaceful morning. A Christmas morning made special with a cup of cocoa and the warm company of a cat.

Denmark's Frederiksborg Castle

From Copenhagen, we hopped on a train to Hillerod. It was a thirty minute ride along Denmark's green country side. When we got to Hillerod, we had to figure out which direction was the castle; there were no signs at the train station and there was no customer service to ask for information. Coincidentally, there was a couple from California who were also looking for the castle and we all decided to just walk and ask the locals. In a matter of minutes, we were able to figure out where we're supposed to be heading.

I was in awe when I saw the castle across the lake. Kepi and I bid goodbye to the California couple as they kept walking while we decided to stop for photos.

It was a good 15 minute walk until we finally reached the front of the castle.

Frederiksborg Castle is one of my favorite castles in Denmark. The location, the castle itself and the gardens are simply spectacular.

Frederiksborg Castle is situated in the centre of Hillerod on three islets in the Castle Lake surrounded by Frederiksborg Castle Gardens.

Frederiksborg Castle Gardens consist of a romantic landscaped garden and a baroque garden, recreated in 1996 according to studies of J.C. Krieger's gardens from 1725. (Source)

The Little Mermaid Of Copenhagen

After the Gefion Fountain, we took the bus to see the Little Mermaid. What I had in my mind was the Ariel in Disney movies - you know, red flowing hair, fair skinned and beautiful voice. Well, the sculpture is very simple but very iconic.

The Little Mermaid symbolizes the fairy tale by Danish author and poet Hans Christian Andersen, the story of a young mermaid who fell in love with a prince who lived on land, and often came up to the edge of the water to look for her love. (Source)

The story of The Little Mermaid is not a very happy one - she visits a witch and agrees to give the witch her tongue, in exchange for legs to replace her fish tail, so she can live on land with her love, the prince she's seen from her visits to the shore. And every step she takes on her new legs hurt like she is walking on swords. To be with her love she chooses to become a mute and to be in pain with every step she takes. Yet despite all her dreams and sacrifices she never gets to be with him. (Source)

Copenhagen's Gefion Fountain

After the Rosenberg Castle, we took the bus to the Gefion Fountain. Copenhagen is real easy to get around with Copenhagen's efficient train and bus system, everything is accessible. Also, we stayed at a hotel walking distance to one of the metro stops, so it was easy for us to just hop on the train wherever we wanted to go. Fortunately, it was perfect walking weather when we were in Copenhagen so we made the most of it and spent most of our days outdoors.

The Gefion Fountain is the largest monument in Copenhagen. The fountain is to Copenhagen what the Fontana di Trevi is to Rome, a wishing-well. The goddess Gefion is the fountain’s main figure.(Source)

Even if the main attraction is the fountain, if you find yourself here, I suggest you walk around the park.

English Church - St. Alban's Church (1885-87)

I love the water lilies. I found this area very relaxing.

Copenhagen's Rosenberg Castle

After our Baltic tour, we stayed in Copenhagen for four days to rest before we head home to the US. Copenhagen is clean, friendly and it's an easy city to navigate. We loved walking around the city, eating bread and pastries on their cafes, exploring the tourist spots and most of all - their beautiful castles. I really enjoyed Copenhagen; there's just something about this city that makes me feel at home. Anyway, one of our first stops is the Rosenberg Castle.

Rosenborg Castle stands today, with its tall towers and its red masonry with sandstone ornaments, as a distinguished example of Christian IV's many building projects, perfect despite many changes during its construction history. The Castle is built in the special Dutch Renaissance style which became typical of Danish buildings during this period. A couple of architects, Bertel Lange and Hans van Steenwinckel, are associated with the Castle. Christian IV's own effort is often discussed but there is no doubt that he came up with many of the ideas. (Source)

The castle is located close to the Royal Garden, where we spent a lot of our time relaxing, watching people and just sitting on their vast grassy lawn.

A Maryland Getaway

We often speak, write and brag about vacations of faraway, forgetting that right where we are is a near destination absolutely beautiful worth exploring.

For Kepi's birthday, I took him to the town of Oxford for a weekend getaway. Oxford is about two hours drive from the Metro DC area, but the atmosphere there is contrast to the bustling city life in DC. Oxford is tucked quietly on the shores of the Chesapeake. Interestingly, Oxford has only one gas station and about five restaurants, that serves good food I may say. But the highlight of our getaway is Sandaway, the bed and breakfast we stayed in perched perfectly on a private beach and THE place to watch the sun set over the Chesapeake.

Christmas Tree And Black Friday

After spending a wonderful Thanksgiving with Mom and Kepi, it was time to put up the tree and light up the house with the Christmas spirit. This tree is so beautiful to look at especially when it's all lit up at night.

Every year, we buy an ornament that represents what our year was like. This year, we added a faberge egg ornament we got in St. Petersburg, Russia.

I already feel Christmas in my heart.

Of course, we hit the stores on Black Friday and here's our loot. I think we did well on the shopping this year especially that we got DVD and Blu Ray movies as cheap as $1.99 to $3.99. Majority of our purchases were 50% off. We also got free Tin Tin ornaments and movie tickets this year. The lines weren't bad, and I think that's because some stores were open at 9 pm and 12 am Thanksgiving Day.

Just wondering, anyone want to do an exchange gift with me? Nothing fancy or expensive but just something to look forward to on the mail. Let me know.

Milan And The Mal Educata Filipinas

I visited Milan in 2010, but I never got around to posting these photos until now.

Kepi and I spent most of our time in Venice, but we decided to hop on the train to Milan to visit an old friend and high school classmate, Vids. It was an emotional meeting as it's been ten years since I last saw her. After the unending hugs at the train station, we took the hop-on and hop-off bus to explore Milan.

We spent most of the bus ride just chatting. There were so many things to say. After all, stories and gossips repressed for years must come out. There were so many updates to be said - about former classmates, friends of old and who married who. We were busily chatting when an Italian lady told us sternly to shut-up. Okay, so Vids and I lowered our voice to a whisper and kept on talking anyway. The bus is a tourist bus filled with all sorts of people talking and laughing, but it bothers me that she singled us out. Also, her companion and herself were also loud in the bus. After a few minutes, the Italian lady stood up and started shouting, "Mal educata, Filippino!" (Bad mannered, Filipino!)

I was in total shock.

Vids got up and started a word fight with the woman. It's a good thing Vids is well-versed in Italian. I was shaking with anger and shock because no one has ever treated me that way. It was a good three minutes of word fight. When we reached our next stop, Vids, Kepi and I decided to get off the bus.

That's my story of Milan and the mal educata Filipinas. I think this is one reason why it took me longer to post my Milan adventure, as I was waiting for my shock and anger to subside. I've been trying to forget about that Milan incident and although it has given me a taste of how some people can be racist, that won't stop me from seeing my friend again and of course enjoying beautiful Milan.

And yes, we watched the sunset on the roof. A wonderful way to experience Milan.

Just An Update

With Friday as Veteran's Day, it's a three-day weekend here and I am ecstatic. Although I've been feeling quite down due to my health issues, I am finding the simple pleasures in life that make me smile again:

* Kepi surprising me with a bouquet of flowers and a card at home. It's a wonderful feeling to come home and be surprised. Thank you, Kepi.

* Mom getting me this cute coin purse. I love it! I bring it with me even if I don't have any coins at the moment. Thank you, Mom.

* Spending the weekend in New York City - I can't wait to walk around Times Square, visit the Rockefeller Center, eat NY Pizza and maybe spend a cool, crisp, fall afternoon exploring Central Park.

* Having lunch at Max's Chicken in New Jersey. I also would love to pick up some Filipino pastries and sweets at the Philippine Bread House. A bunch of Ensaymada would be nice.

* Downloading new Christmas songs from iTunes. It seems that Christmas songs do wonders to my soul. I just love listening to them.

* Planning for the holidays. I can't wait to put up the tree this year and also get started with my Christmas shopping. I am tapping my fingers for Black Friday.

* Preparing holiday cards for mailing.

* Surviving the first semester in grad school, I only have two final papers to go.

* Trying to manage my treatment well and positivity is slowly seeping into my every day life.

It's just there's a big difference between the ones that you would wear during the day and the ones that you would wear going out at night. For one thing, they're bigger in general.
The only clutches that I have now are only appropriate for night so I'm making sure that I buy at least one that I can carry around during the day. When I was online shopping for a perfect fall daytime clutch, I ran across some info on clearwire coverage. I looked through it some and decided to change over my internet service at my apartment to it.

I did find this really cute fall clutch that's pretty large and made of distressed looking blue leather. It's perfectly casual, but I think I can dress it up a little bit too.

Stockholm's Millesgarden

Millesgarden is an art museum and sculpture garden, located on the island of Lidingö in Stockholm, Sweden. It is located on the grounds of the home of sculptor Carl Milles and his wife, artist Olga Milles, who are both buried there.

Carl Milles was born and raised in Lagga near Uppsala, the son of an officer, major Emil Anderson. Carl's mother, Valborg died when he was just three years old. Carl began his schooling in Stockholm, but left prematurely and became apprenticed to a cabinet maker. Later he attended evening classes in woodwork, carving and modelling at the Stockholm Technical School.

In 1897 Carl was awarded a grant by the Swedish Handicraft Society, permitting him to travel to Paris, where he supported himself doing ornamental carpentry while studying anatomy at Ecole des Beux-Artes. Beginning in 1899 he had original sculpture at the Paris Salon and continued to exhibit there each year until 1906. (Source)

St. Martin Fountain - The fountain is Carl Milles' last completed work of art. Carl Milles chose the legend of St Martin as a subject for the fountain. The holy Martin was a saint from the fourth century who was very charitable and gave to the poor. Here he is cutting a corner of his cloak to give the reclining beggar as clothes. This is also an equestrian sculpture, and just like Folke Filbyter, the horse and rider are twisting in different directions, thereby creating a powerful movement. God's Hand

God's Hand - A small man is standing on a large hand. He is looking upwards and his body is tense, with fingers splayed. The man is balancing on the index finger and thumb of the large hand, a feat that seems difficult enough in itself, but his exertion is of another nature. He is gazing with rapt attention at something in the sky, as though he were receiving a message or taking part in a dialogue. (Source)

The Sussana Fountain - Grand Prix winner at the Paris Exposition in 1925. In the middle of a sunken ornamental pool on the upper terrace of Millesgården, stands a key work by Carl Milles, the Susanna Fountain. The sculpture is hewn from one solid block of black granite in the compact style with smooth surfaces and soft contours that is characteristic of Carl Milles' work from this period. The granite is from Glimåkra in southern Sweden. Many of Carl Milles' sculptures are placed in fountains or pools, and Milles was often inspired by stories from the Bible, astrology or Greek mythology. (Source)

The Aganippe fountain 1955 - Aganippe was the name of a spring gushing forth from the mountain of Helicon, according to legend created where the winged horse Pegasus alighted with his hooves. Aganippe was the muses´ holy source and had the virtue of conferring poetic inspiration on those who drank from its waters. The muses were the patrons of arts and sciences. Each one of the nine muses represented an art or science. (Source)

Olga Milles: Olga Granner's long years of art studies began in Graz at Landschaftliche Zeichen-Akademie 1886-92, with the prospect of later becoming an art teacher. Her education continued with a scholarship to Azbe-Schule in Munich 1893-95 and was completed at Academie Colarossi in Paris, 1899-1901.

Ruth Milles: Sculptor Ruth Milles was born April 19, 1873 at Bällsta Manor in Vallentuna. She began her art studies at the Tekniska Skolan in Stockholm, 1890-93 and continued at the Royal Academy of Art, 1894-98.

Upon completion she travelled to Paris, where she remained for several years executing sculpture and illustrations. Her summers were spent in the village of Briac in Britanny, depicting the fishing folks life in sculpture. Ruth Miles was awarded the Special prize in the Paris Salon 1902. (Source)

The Oresund Bridge And Souvenirs

Of course while in Stockholm, I couldn't resist purchasing some souvenirs. And, my visit to a city or country is not complete until I taste their very own sweets or chocolates. I've collected quite a number of fridge magnets now, and it seems that they're now my favorite item to collect; it used to be postcards.

Anyway, apart from the souvenirs that make me excited, the Oresund Bridge was one cool bridge that amazed me. Connecting Sweden and Denmark, the bridge is over 10 miles (16,4 km) and is the connection between the metropolitan areas of Copenhagen and Malmo. Built in 1991, the bridge is perfect for travelers wanting a quick connection between Sweden and Denmark without flying, the Oresund Bridge now carries more than 60,000 travelers daily - amongst them both local commuters and visitors. The Oresund Bridge offers a 4-lane road carrying 6 million vehicles per year, and two train tracks (another 8 million people each year). (Source)

Sweden's Gamla Stan

After Estonia, we embarked on our trip to Stockholm, Sweden. On the bus en route to Stockholm, I was amazed at the vast open lands in Sweden's country side. There were so many trees, farms, mountains, grazing horses on the hills and the road to the city was littered with beautiful purple flowers. All I could think of was getting off the bus to pick up wildflowers. I was impressed at how naturally beautiful the country side is. I told myself that next time, I'll plan on visiting the country side of Sweden. For now, Stockholm will do.

At about 9 am, we approached the island of Stadsholmen and the medieval town of Gamla Stan (Old Town) stood there waiting to be explored. Gamla Stan emerged in the 13th century and is home to Sweden's Royal Palace. This Royal Palace is one of the largest inhabited palaces in the world with over 600 rooms. In addition to the reception rooms, there are several interesting museums in the Palace, including the Royal Armory, with royal costumes and armor.

Tallin's Olde Hansa

You have to taste a host country's food, that's the beauty of travel.

While visiting Tallin, I really wanted to eat authentic Estonian food, so we walked around the old city to find something that would fit our budget and our taste buds. We passed through Olde Hansa a couple of times, checked out the other restaurants but we decided to go back to Olde Hansa anyway; we made the right decision.

Olde Hansa had the right medieval feel and the servers were so warm and welcoming; they were also wearing medieval clothing. The restaurant was lighted with old lamps and candles, Estonian music played in the background, the hard wood tables flickered with the candlelight and the walls brightly festooned with draperies. It was the perfect place to fill our empty stomachs, rest our achy feet and wipe our sweaty brows and paws.

Climbing St. Olav

Here's a little history of St. Olav's Church:

St. Olaf’s Church or St. Olav's Church (Oleviste kirik) in Tallinn, Estonia, is believed to have been built in the 12th century and to have been the center for old Tallinn's Scandinavian community prior to the conquest of Tallinn by Denmark in 1219. Its dedication relates to King Olaf II of Norway (a.k.a. Saint Olaf, 995-1030). The first known written records referring to the church date back to 1267, and it was extensively rebuilt during the 14th century.

A legend tells that the builder of the church, named Olaf, upon its completion, fell to his death from atop the tower. It is said that when his body hit the ground, a snake and a toad crawled out of his mouth. There is a wall-carving depicting this event in the adjoining Chapel of Our Lady.

Around 1500, the building reached a height of 159 meters. The motivation for building such an immensely tall steeple must have been to use it as a maritime signpost, which made the trading city of Tallinn visible from far out at sea. Between 1549 and 1625, when the spire burnt down after a lightning strike, it was the tallest building in the world. The steeple of St. Olav has been hit by lightning at least eight times, and the whole church has burned down three times throughout its known existence. Following several rebuildings, its overall height is now 123.7 meters.

From 1944 until 1991, the Soviet KGB used Oleviste's spire as a radio tower and surveillance point. It currently continues as an active Baptist church.

The tower's viewing platform offers panoramic views over the old town and is open to the public from April through Nov, daily 10:00 - 18:00. Admission 30kr (1.92 €). ( Source here.)

I was soaked in my own sweat while climbing the tower of St. Olav. I was puffing and huffing, but all my tiredness was swept away when I saw the spectacular panoramic view of Tallinn.

Old Town Tallin's Shops and Restaurants

As I mentioned in my previous post, the shops at Tallin's Old Town are charming and such a delight to visit. I love that their crafts are handmade and are authentically Estonian. One of my pet-peeves is seeing souvenirs sold in a country like for example Germany but their souvenirs are made in China (just an example). Just my opinion, but it doesn't make sense buying a souvenir if the souvenir is not made in the country I'm visiting.

Visiting Tallinn, Estonia

Setting aside my current health issues, here's reminiscing my travel to Tallinn earlier this year. What I found most intriguing with Tallinn is the small, old town feel. The people there were welcoming and I love the abundance of shops and authentic Estonian restaurants. Although our visit there was quick, I found myself mesmerized by the Old Town's charm, the warmness of the people and the good ol' feel of a historic medieval town.

It was early in the morning when we walked to the Old Town. It was still quiet.

This church building is dated all the way to the 13th century.

According to the church pamphlet, this is the first congregation where services were held in the Estonian language (1531).

My Mind Is "Some Place"

These days, I find it tough to blog.

My mind is just "some place" and although I've been wanting to update this blog, I still have tons of photos to share from my last trip, the desire is not there. Perhaps because I have so much in my mind regarding my coming treatment. For the time being, I'll post my thoughts in bullets:

My acid reflux seems to be improving, as I am getting better in channeling my stress. Although I'm still a bit anxious about my coming treatment. Read this post in case you dont' know. I'll be seeing my hematologist this coming Monday.
Positive thinking is still an everyday practice yet sometimes I can't help it when my mind goes astray to "what ifs."
Six more days and Mom is here. Kepi and I have been preparing the guest room for her. I am so excited.
This weekend, we'll be moving in some furniture. Fun stuff!
Cleaned my closet last night and put away the summer clothes. Sweaters, knee-high socks and coats are in!
I smell Apple picking season.
Grad school is going well. I just need to catch up on some of my readings.
I badly miss coffee. Coffee is a no, no if you have acid reflux.

I hope everyone is doing well and that we're all looking forward to October.

You may have noticed that I have not been posting much lately. It's been a rough few weeks. Apart from being taken to the ER (twice) a week ago, my platelets are at its lowest at 23. I've also been suffering with acid reflux due to stress and also found out that I have a mild bulge on my spine causing me occassional pain. I can't write that well these days, as I am still trying to understand or make sense of what's going on with my life. It's been so hard to concentrate on school while going through all these health issues, and I am hoping that I'll surpass all these challenges with the help of God and the support of family and friends.

Next month, I'll be joining a clinical trial for my aplastic anemia (AA). It's been a seat and wait for a few years with my AA but this time, my doctor and I have decided that it is time to confront it. I've been living with AA since I was 27 years old, and I do ask for your support and prayers as I begin this journey to get well. My confidence and courage are battered, and I need every ounce of support and encouragement these days.

I am scared of what is to come. I am scared of the pain. I am scared of losing my sense of self. I am scared of so many things.

I am a work in progress, and I know that God will be with me each step I take.

Late for Carpool

I was logged onto the security choice website this afternoon when it hit me: I completely forgot about carpool this afternoon! I jumped up quickly and realized at I was twenty-minutes late. With the traffic and the ride to the school, I just knew I would end up being forty-five minutes late. All I could think about were my kids sitting underneath the awning with the neighbors. I don’t know what happened to me. In six years of sharing a carpool, I have never missed my pick up day. I felt like Bruce Jenner when he forgot to pick up his kids on “Keeping up with the Kardashians”. It was completely mortifying. When I finally got there and picked up the kids, the safety patrol guard and teacher were sitting there tapping their feet. The kids hopped in the car and were giving me a hard time about being late. I decided to take the kids to McDonald’s (a trip we never make) to make them happy. A dozen chicken nuggets and an hour on the play place later. The kids were happy again. They laughed and said they wish I were late more often!

Water Lilies

When visiting the Longwood Gardens, I highly recommend spending time at the Main Conservatory. At this time of the year, apart from all the different varieties of flowers on exhibit, they also have pools filled with more than 100 types of day and night-blooming tropical waterlilies, hardy waterlilies, lotuses, giant water-platters and other aquatic and bog plants.

My Love For Gardens

A couple of weeks ago, we visited Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. This place is really neat and there's so much to see. We only planned to visit for the day, but we were unable to see the entirety of the gardens. So, we bought an annual membership and could return anytime of the year. What I really like about this place is that, apart from being beautiful, they have exhibits going on throughout the year. For the long Labor Day weekend, we're going back to Longwood again and I hope to take more photos. Also, I can't wait to check out the historic bed and breakfast we're staying for the weekend.

Peterhof: The Capital Of Fountains

On our second day in St. Petersburg, we toured Peterhof, one of most famous ensembles, sometimes dubbed "the capital of fountains," a magical sight of water and gold, marble and bronze, magnificent paterres and age-old trees. (Source: Peterhof Guide Book) I was straining already from all the walking we did at Catherine's Palace, the Hermitage and a night show of Russian folk dances the day before, but once I saw how beautiful and inviting Peterhof was, I forgot how tired I felt and just snapped photos the entirety of our visit.

Although we didn't tour the interior of Peterhof, I think that the gardens and fountains are much more beautiful especially that the blue skies and warm weather framed the impressive palace and its enticing gardens and fountains.

St. Petersburg: White Nights

During our two-day visit in St. Petersburg, we were lucky because we witnessed the Russian White Nights. This wasn't the first time I've experienced a phenomenon like this, as I've also experienced this during my three years living in Dutch Harbor, Alaska.

White Nights, normally lasting from June 11^th to July 2^nd. The White Nights (Beliye Nochi) are a curious phenomenon caused by St. Petersburg's very northerly geographical location - at 59 degrees 57' North (roughly on the same latitude as Oslo, Norway, the southern tip of Greenland and Seward, Alaska). St. Petersburg is the world's most northern city with a population over 1 million, and its stands at such a high latitude that the sun does not descend below the horizon enough for the sky to grow dark. In fact night becomes curiously indistinguishable from day, so much so that the authorities never need to turn the city's streetlights on! (Source)

The Hermitage: Halls And Galleries

If Pushkin has a summer palace - Catherine's Palace, the heart of the Hermitage Complex is the Winter Palace. The Hermitage, which means "a place of solitude" in French is a former winter residence for Russia's monarchs. "The Hermitage is composed of the Winter Palace, Small, Large and New Hermitages, and they all form one of the most brilliant architectural ensembles in the center of St. Petersburg. The Hermitage Museum boasts of an extensive collection of art and culture from around the world." (Source: Hermitage Guide Book)

The collection of art here is amazing and for history and art lovers, this is a gold mine.

It was packed when we visited. There are some galleries in the Hermitage that are air conditioned and some are not. As it was summer, apart from the hot and humid weather add to that the crowded galleries so it felt suffocating. I've seen a couple of people who fainted and one has to be carried to a van.

The name of this room escapes me but I was sure glad there was room to breathe.

What I've seen during my visit was just a minute sample of the Hermitage's collection. This place is massive and according to our guide, you would have to walk 24 miles to see all the exhibits. In addition to the gilded rooms, we also toured different themed rooms in the palace. I think that if you like history, you'll enjoy looking at the portraits of royalty especially the Romanovs. I've only read about them in books, but looking at their photos and knowing that they once called Catherine's Palace their home makes me feel closer to history.

This is the view when we exited the palace. When I took this photo, we were on our way to the pick up point since we lost sight of our tour group.

This is the Amber Room, and this is the room that caught my interest the most. I think that most people who visit Catherine's Palace yearn to walk into this room; I did. When the palace was raided by Nazis, they took all the amber from this room and took them to Germany. This room is a product of careful reconstruction and since they're still searching for more amber, some portions of this room are still uncovered. Tsarskoye Selo: The Grand Hall

Catherine's Palace is huge. Without a tour guide, I could probably get lost in its beautiful rooms.

Room after room, I found myself mesmerized with either the gold gilding or the antique collections they have displayed, each telling their stories, where they've been and how they found their way to the palace. Even the palace whispers her stories through its walls, its elegant draperies, its gilded candlesticks and its parquet floors. One story that caught my attention is how much of this palace is a result of present day restoration. The palace was bombed during the Nazi occupation therefore leaving most of the palace in ruins. Restoration experts have to build this palace from historical photos and paintings in order to restore it to its former glory and to get it to its grandeur today.

Do remember that Russia came under Nazi invasion and at that time, a lot of the palace was bombed and destroyed. These two Cherubins are originals while the rest of the Grand Hall was restored by carefully looking at the photos and paintings from the archives.

Tsarskoye Selo: Summer Residence Of Russian Czars

Of all places, we got lost in Pushkin.

Since the Catherine's Palace (Tsarskoye Selo) is only allowed to be toured with a group, the palace was packed during our visit; there were probably 40 to 50 groups at that time. Towards the end of our tour, a few people in our group decided to use the restrooms while we waited outside. Due to the flood of visitors, it was so packed that we got pushed or dragged with the flow of people that we lost sight of our own group. Imagine the fright and anxiety I felt being lost in a sea of people taller than I am and speaking different languages. It's a good thing our tour guide designated a wait area just in case we got lost, so we hurriedly made our way there. After 45 minutes of frantically waiting for our tour guide at the meeting point, I couldn't stop pacing back and forth while controlling the urge to cry. Well, after about 50 minutes, our guide finally showed up, only then I could breathe relief.

Why exactly was I frightened? Because (1) our immigration experience was a "little" unfriendly, Philippine passport holders got even worse treatment; (2) there's an unspoken unfriendliness or uneasiness towards tourists or more specifically US citizens; and, (3) people we spoke to, to ask for directions didn't speak English or were just not interested in helping; they just shrugged their shoulders and walked on. Maybe my feelings were wrong or maybe I had preconceived feelings towards Russia due to too many history books I've read regarding the sticky US-Russia relations, but it seems that the other travelers in my group felt the same way. It was sort of an unspoken truce that it is NOT a good idea to get lost in Russia or else you'll have a hell of an experience dealing with immigration authorities.

After all the hassles, St. Petersburg is a very interesting place to visit and that our experiences there are priceless. This city has so much to offer to the world. There are just a few things to remember while visiting St. Petersburg:

for now, it is best to join a tour package, so that you don't have deal with procuring a visa that would cost about $600.00 per person (for US citizens)
be ready to sweat - there's no air conditioning, in the tour buses and even in the museums
drink lots of water - if you visit in the summer, expect the museums packed, humid and hot
practice your Russian - learn a few phrases as English is not widely spoken (yet)
be neat and make sure there are no erasures when filling up immigration forms - Russian immigration is very strict with erasures
stick to your group
be respectful and follow rules - museums there are well guarded and there are people monitoring visitors all the time
carry cash - taking photos inside museums and shows are paid

Today, we'll visit Pushkin and enter Catherine's Palace (Tsarskoye Selo)

These are the five golden domes of the Palace Chapel. It is rumored that over 200 pounds of gold were originally used to gild these domes, but our guide said that these days, they use paint. "More than 100 kilograms of gold were used to gild the sophisticated stucco façade and numerous statues erected on the roof. It was even rumored that the palace's roof was constructed entirely of gold." (Source)

Built for Catherine I of Russia, wife of Peter the Great, who ruled Russia for two years after his death. When it was first built, the palace was a simple two-storey palace but it was the Empress Elizabeth, daughter of Catherine 1, who built it to its grandeur today. (Source)

The north side of the palace. This palace is 17 miles south of St. Petersburg. It is beautifully constructed and designed. It is impressive with its bright paint and its massive length of 740 meters or 2427 feet.
